Boston -- New Zealands Nick Willis, who hadnt run a competitive mile in nearly a year, used a last-lap sprint to overhaul Will Leer and capture the mile run at the 15th Boston Indoor Games on Saturday.
Willis crossed the finish line in a world leading time of three minutes, 55.26, with American Leer just two strides back in 3:55.66.
Ethiopias Dejen Gebremeskel ran second (13:11.78) and countryman Bekana Daba third (13:11.78) as Rupp ran faster than his previous USA record (13:18.12 last year) but was just fourth in 13:14.21.
In the other featured 5,000 metres, Tirunesh Dibaba was a runaway winner of the womens race in 14:44.53, but nowhere close to record pace.
Dibaba had set a world record of 14:27.42 here in 2007, only to see countrywoman Meseret Defar lower it to 14:24.37 in Stockholm in 2009. Dibaba is generally recognised as the greatest womens distance runner in track history. With no one to offer a serious threat, Sally Kipyego of Kenya was a distant second in 14:52.67 and just one other runner finished the race.
